What is internal communications?

Internal communications is a form of internal marketing - marketing focusing within the organisation, towards its own employees, to ensure they remain engaged, understand the purpose of their job within the organisation, and their role in advocating the business outside of the organisation. Someone within internal communications may also have other functions - logistical or advisory, for instance.

Career in internal communications

Internal comms is a relatively new role within most modern and large organisations. It draws heavily on sociological and psychological theory, public relations, media and journalism. Those looking to get into the profession would do well to study in degrees aimed at looking at the individual relative to their position within society, which includes most humanities degrees; however, there will be more focused qualifications available to those who want to study this field specifically within a business context. Broadly speaking, those looking to break into internal communications as a career may start out within PR or in junior marketing positions, as most common internal communications positions tend to cater to more senior roles.
